How To Change Rims
Changing your rims is a bit more involved than changing your tires, but it’s not so difficult that anyone with the right tools can’t do it. The first step in the process involves the removal of your tires after jacking your vehicle up off the ground.
Ensure that the entire tire is off the ground when you begin, and remove the lug nuts. Then deflate the tire by compressing the needle found in the valve stem.
Once you can no longer get air from the tire to grab a screwdriver with a broad flat head. You’ll use this to slide between the tire and the rim to pop the seal they form. Once the seal is popped you’ll use a pry bar to pull the tired off the wheel, be sure to pull it towards the outside.
If necessary you can get someone to add weight to the tire by standing on it and try to pry it off using the rim as leverage. Now put the tire on to the new rim and begin adding air until the rim is secure and sealed. Mount your new rim back on the tire.
How To Pick Rims For Jeep Wrangler
When you first start looking for rims you’re sure to be dazzled by the sheer variety that is out there. There are some amazing looking selections on the market, but don’t let that shiny new set distract you from what’s important. You want rims that are going to go the distance, and that’s about more than looks. Finding a set that walks the line between stunningly attractive and seriously effective isn’t going to be a cakewalk.
The most important part of choosing your new rim is making sure that it comes in a size that will accommodate your existing tires and vehicle. Thankfully this information can be found on the side of your existing tires unless you’re going for a different design altogether. Once you’ve found this you need to decide what you’re hoping to get out of your new rims.
If all you’re looking for is a good set of rims then it won’t matter too much what you find so long as they look good. There are countless styles out there and so long as you don’t need to change your tire size to suit your tastes, then you just have to order them to fit your existing tires.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for improved performance or a smooth ride, or both, you’re going to have to dig deeper and be a bit pickier.
Rims that have a wider diameter will provide you with a more stable ride and improved cornering capability. They can also improve your braking distance and acceleration while providing more tactile feedback from the road. Unfortunately, these rims are also more expensive and have a shorter lifespan than traditional rims, and can impact your turning radius.
If you’re looking for a sporty rim that also provides a smooth ride you may want to look into smaller rims with an aspect ratio that’s higher due to the wheels mounted on them. These can provide an improved ride by smoothing out potholes, debris, speed bumps, and the like while protecting the rims themselves from damage. Not all vehicles can accommodate smaller rims so check with your manufacturer before you begin.
Two other things that you’re going to want to pay special attention to are the pattern of the bolts on your desired rim, and the offset and backspacing elements. These are going to be essential in determining whether your vehicle is capable of using the rims at all.
Bolt patterns will determine whether it will fit on your vehicle at all, while incorrect backspacing and offsetting can make it rub against your vehicle’s bodywork or interferes with your suspension and braking components.
The collection of rims I have here just barely scratched the surface of what the market has to offer, but I felt these were some of the most visually and structurally impressive pieces available on the market. They all performed admirably during the time they were on my Jeep Wrangler, though each had a slightly different feel on the vehicle.
