Motor oil replacement is known to be seasonal. When cold weather approaches, many drivers will have a headache – they need to choose oil for winter. Winter operation is a severe test for a vehicle’s engine.
Rapid temperature drops, impact loads during cold starts in freezing weather, large amounts of road salt in a blend with the tiniest particles of sand in the engine – all this imposes special requirements to engine oil in winter operation.
It so happens that “winter” preference is traditionally given to “semi-synthetic.” Why? Many car owners justify it by the moderate price of oils of this group, with a sufficiently high level of quality. Moreover, there is a widespread opinion that semi-synthetic motor oil is the best option for any season. Is it right?
Let’s make this clear at once – despite the widespread popularity of semi-synthetic oils, it is worth noting that “semi-synthetic” is, however, a more or less successful compromise between price and quality, depending on the oil composition and quality level of a particular brand.
The main thing for engine oil in winter is high cold start characteristics and maximum thermal/chemical stability. Mineral engine oils are able to provide standard starter crankshaft “turnability” at engine start, up to a temperature not lower than 5F/-4F. But it can be much colder in North Dakota! Synthetic oils retain excellent cold start characteristics from -22F to -40F.
At the same time, according to various engine test results, using synthetic oils with viscosity grade SAE 5W-40, engine part wear at cold starts at -4F will be about 200 times lower than when using mineral engine oil SAE 15W-40! A cold start with mineral oil in such weather equals to 125-190 run miles. Multiply this by cold starts, and you will get an impressive economy on “synthetics.”
How do semi-synthetic oils look like here? To start with, the share of synthetic components in such oils does not exceed 10-30%. All the rest is mineral oil and additives. Naturally, with such a percentage of components, you should not expect any sharp improvement in cold-resistance and starting characteristics of “semi-synthetics” in comparison with quality mineral motor oils.
Starting qualities of semi-synthetic motor oils are only 5F better than those of mineral motor oils. Plus, the congelation temperature of SAE 15W-40 and SAE 10W-40 oils is practically the same!
Besides, semi-synthetic motor oils practically do not differ much from mineral oils in their resistance to oil base damage. And if in summer, this difference is more or less noticeable, then in severe winter conditions, the difference actually goes to zero.
Still, we should admit that the best oil for winter is fully synthetic. How do such oils differ from mineral and semi-synthetic?
The difference is mainly in the molecular structure of the oil base. In the process of synthetic oil production, molecules with the set, optimal operating properties are “built” (synthesized). Synthetic oils, in contrast to mineral oils, have maximum chemical and thermal stability.
Chemical stability means that when synthetic oils operate in the engine, there are almost no chemical transformations (oxidation, aging, etc.) that degrade its performance and lead to its destruction.
Thermal stability is the preservation of the optimal oil viscosity value in a wide temperature range, an easy and safe cold start, and at the same time, maximum engine protection in its highest temperature zones at high speeds and loads.
Due to the peculiarities of their molecular structure, synthetic oils have higher (compared to mineral and semi-synthetic) fluidity and penetration ability. Enough to say that the full synthetic oil engine lubrication process at cold starts does not exceed 40-50 seconds, while standard mineral oils can require several dozens of minutes!
Thus, by using really high-quality synthetic engine oils, you will protect your engine and provide a truly long service life.
Types of Engine Oil
- Semi-synthetic oil is a lubricant which has mineral substances, produced as a result of oil refining, added to its composition in minimal quantities.

0W-40, 5W-40, and 15W-40 Difference
The main parameter of engine oil is its viscosity or fluidity. According to the classification of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the binary number in the designation of engine oils means that these oils are all-season. Most car owners usually prefer such oils because of their versatility.
The first index, e.g., 5W, characterizes oil viscosity at low temperatures. The lower the temperature, the more the oil thickens, and the harder it is to pump. The second digit indicates the high temperature of the oil. High viscosity, in this case, provides the oil film formation on friction parts of the engine.
In terms of numerical values, motor oils differ only in terms of the high-temperature viscosity index. For 5W-30, this value ranges from 9.3 to 12.6 mm2/s and for 5W-40, from 12.6 to 16.3 mm2/s.
However, we must not forget that viscosity affects the overall performance of the engine and depends very much on its design. Here again, it should be noted that when choosing the best option, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use oil with the recommended viscosity and required approvals.
If your truck’s engine is designed for 5W-30, 5W-40 will increase the load on the oil pump and increase friction. This will also reduce oil consumption in the oil system, because the higher the viscosity, the higher the hydraulic resistance, which means that the operating point of the pump and system begins to operate towards lower flow rates.
This results in engine wear and oil starvation. Conversely, if you use 5W-30 instead of the manufacturer’s recommended 5W-40, the oil will be too liquid for your engine, and the film will not hold well in the piston-cylinder tribosystem, which will also cause wear.
Typically, most manufacturers recommend 5W-40 oil, as “40” is the average parameter. Oils with “30” are mainly designed for new cars, and with “50” – for vehicles with high mileage.
As a whole, the following can be distinguished for compared samples in the form of basic characteristics:
- at average engine oil temperature, the viscosity of 5W40 is 1.5 higher than 5W-30;
- 5W-40 is designed to operate with modern internal combustion engines characterized by their high thermal stress. This oil retains its viscosity properties well. When high shear rates and
- temperatures are present in various areas of the engine, the oil successfully holds the film, preventing friction;
- the temperature range of 5W-30 is shifted downwards compared to 5W-40. This means that the oil has a lower viscosity and provides a more effective result at cold starts, but at high
- temperatures, it becomes too fluid, which almost eliminates its lubricating properties.
- Therefore, only the manufacturer’s recommendations should be taken into account, and engine oil should be selected according to these recommendations.
0W-40 marked oil is a more practical material for a car, compared to 5W-40. 0W-40 is produced through synthesis and the most complex chemical formulas. For this reason, the content has improved formula and higher viscosity. Therefore, this lubricant does not come into harmful contact with engine parts, no oxidation processes, etc.
So, we can say that even a new ice age won’t stop you from starting the engine with 0W-40. And there is also no need to change it before summer, unless, of course, your climate is too hot. With this oil, the engine feels confident even in case of overheating. That is, if in summer (not too hot), you will use 0W-40 instead of 15W-40, the engine will not feel any difference.
Winters with lower than -4F ambient temperatures will, however, make you switch to 0W-40 anyway. Besides, few people consider 0W-40’s fuel economy benefits. Keep in mind minimum and maximum oil temperatures: -4F/113F for 15W-40 and -31F/86F for 0W-40. Consider your climate.
The main disadvantage of 0W-40 is, of course, the highest price of all motor oils on the market. For this reason, if you cannot buy 0W-40, the best choice is 5W-40 or 15W-40.

How much oil do you need? How to check the oil level and its condition?
6.0 Powerstroke holds 15 quarts of oil. So it needs almost 4 gallons of oil.
Park your vehicle on a flat surface (without any slopes or pits) and shut off the engine. Accurate measurement is only possible when the liquid is evenly distributed in the pallet.
Take a look at the manual. Most car enthusiasts have trouble checking the oil level on a cold or hot engine. Although most people recommend that you measure the engine oil level when it’s cool, otherwise, wait 15 to 20 minutes so the lubricant can flow into the crankcase – this will make it less viscous.
Not many people stumble on this step, but still. After pulling out the dipstick for the first time, you should wipe it thoroughly with a cloth that does not leave any small hairs. Next, place the stick back in, insert it fully, wait 5-10 seconds, and then pull it out again.
Now you should see the oil level. It should be somewhere in the middle of the hash marks or closer to the higher mark. If it’s higher, you are overfull.
Many people wrongly assume that the “right” engine oil level is max. or even a little higher. Wrong. Ideally, oil traces should end between the “minimum” and “maximum” hashmark, closer to the latter – that’s when you can safely close the hood.
If you’re checking the level right after an oil change, add new oil about one qt less to where you think the capacity is. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Shut it down, and let it chill for 5 minutes. This will make the new oil black enough to make it visible enough on the dipstick.
It would be best if you let the truck sit for a bit to ensure most of the oil is back in the pan, and you’re getting an accurate reading. After it’s rested, pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, insert it back into the tube until it’s fully seated, wait 5-10 seconds, and then pull the dipstick out and check the consistency and color of the oil fluid.
The oil that does not need changing is yellow-green. If it is dark brown or black, has a dense or watery structure, then immediately drive the vehicle to a service station or find out how to refill the engine yourself.
Following these simple rules is essential, because violating the procedure is fraught with disinformation of the driver, and thus, the untimely problem solution. If there is too much oil, it can get in the crankcase ventilation system, engine cylinders, or catalyst.
As for the lack of oil in the engine, it is a direct way to the so-called “oil starvation.” In general, both cases lead to huge risks – whether it’s expensive repairs, or replacing the entire power unit.
You have to check your engine oil level periodically. Even if the vehicle was constantly standing in the garage, there is a high probability of leaks provoked by gasket’s abrasion, seal and hose joint damage. Therefore, a proper weekly oil check will not hurt.
How often should you change your oil in Powerstroke 6.0?
As stated on powerstrokehub.com:
7,500 miles/6 months under normal operating conditions.
5,000 miles/6 months under severe duty conditions.

220-250 degrees. However, the perfect oil temperature for 6.0 is 200 degrees. The difference between ECT and EOT should be not more than 15 degrees (OC efficiency) at 60 mph, unloaded, on flat terrain.
The oil temperature depends on how/where you drive the truck. Extreme conditions, fast driving, bumpy roads, slopes or hills make the engine work harder, which directly affects the oil temperature.
- The first reason for the high oil temperature is a bad oil cooler. You should check if it’s clogged or buy a new, bigger one (Motorcraft filters are good).
- Also, check your oil pressure gauge is operating right.
- Check if the EOT and EOC are the same. They should be.
- You may also need a coolant filter as well.
You should monitor both the oil and coolant temps together – the one doesn’t make a lot of sense without the other.

How to know if engine oil is diluted in 6.0 Powerstroke?
Fuel dilution occurs in any engine and it’s normal. You need to test your oil (e.g. @ polarislabs.com) and check your oil analysis report. To prevent the fuel from mixing with your oil, avoid excessive idling and make sure your fuel injector is alright.
How to change engine oil in 6.0 Powerstroke?
Make sure you have all the necessary equipment and materials before you start. You will need 15W-30 or 15W-40 engine oil, wheel chocks, a ratchet with a 36 mm socket, 3/4″ combination wrench, Motorcraft 6.0L Powerstroke oil filter with O-ring seal, drain pan, drain plug gasket, an oil funnel, newspapers, and wipes.
Before draining the oil, start the truck and leave the engine running for 1-2 minutes or go around your block to heat up the oil – this will make it easier to drain the oil. Make sure your truck is on a flat surface. Then pull the parking brake and place the chocks under the rear wheels to prevent any movements. Open the hood and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
- Locate the engine oil filter cover on top of the engine. Loosen the oil filter cap using the ratchet. Lift the oil filter cap to remove the filter and the O-ring attached at the bottom. Remove the filter and O-ring from the lid and dispose of both appropriately.
- Get under the vehicle and locate the oil pan drain plug. When you find the plug, spread a newspaper and position the drain pan underneath it. Loosen the drain plug with the 36 mm socket by turning it counterclockwise. Then gently remove the plug and allow the oil to drain completely into the pan. Be careful – the motor oil can be hot. When the oil flows out (the jet will turn into separate drops), check and clean the thread of the drain plug.
- Manually reinsert the drain plug and tighten it a quarter turn (do not overtighten or you may damage the thread and gasket) with a 3/4″ wrench. Be careful not to provoke oil leakage! If necessary, replace the drain plug gasket.
- Replace the oil filter. Leave the pan under the machine and locate the oil filter. Loosen the oil filter with the 3/4″ wrench, turning it counterclockwise. Remove the oil filter manually. Before installing the new filter, apply some engine oil to the new gasket (check your owner’s manual) so that it does not adhere and crack. Besides, it’s also good protection against oil leaks. Finally, install and fix the new filter manually.
- It’s time to fill the engine with new oil. Open the filler cap on the passenger side of the truck, next to the firewall. Plug the oil funnel into the socket to avoid splashing and pour 15 liters of 15W-40 into the tank when the operating temperature is over 30F, or 15W-30 if the temperature is below 30F.
- Almost there. But you should still check the oil level. To do this, shut down the engine, take out and wipe the dipstick. Put it in and pull it out to make sure the oil level is fine.
- Close the drain pan and remove it from under the car. Connect the negative contact cable to the battery and start the engine. Allow the engine to run for a few minutes and then check for leaks. Check the engine oil level again with an engine oil dipstick. Close the lid.
- Pour the used oil into an old container or other suitable storage container and put the old filter in a plastic bag. Dispose of dirty newspapers and wipes. Now you and your car can both go on the road.
The best way to get rid of the old engine oil is to recycle it. Many service stations and replacement points accept old oil and oil filters free of charge.
